Seems i was missing a key word it the Lisp loop form that allows me to tether actions in the form together. Here is an example:

loop for n in '(1 2 3 4 5)
          when (when (equal (mod n 2) 0) n)
          collect it
          and do (format t "~A" n))

I found a link to "On Lisp" which looks to be a very good book.
